Flaunting high-concept charisma on the Hobart waterfront, Macq 01 is one of Tasmania’s most sought-after destination hotels. The hotel’s 114 rooms and suites embody one of five Tasmanian character traits, and feature a plush contemporary design by Sydney firm Pike Withers. Premium rooms overlook Hunter Street or the harbour, and are both available in superior or accessible options. For a more opulent stay, choose a suite in either corner or waterfront positions.

A spacious walk-in shower, private balcony, minibar, 55-inch flat screen TV, 24-hour room service and comfortable modern furnishings are common to all rooms, available with king or twin bedding. Guests staying in suites can also expect a luxurious, deep-soaking bathtub to while away an evening in.

At the base of the hotel, Old Wharf Restaurant is the centrepiece of the Macq 01 hospitality stable. From the open kitchen, head chef Alvin Sim champions Tasmanian growers and farmers including Cape Grim Beef, Scottsdale Pork and Bruny Island Oysters on a changing seasonal menu. Vegan and dietary-friendly options are in abundance, and the restaurant is open from breakfast through till dinner.

Next door, Evolve Spirits bar is a temple of Tasmanian spirits. Drams by Overeem, Callington, Spring Bay and the iconic Lark Distillery are pouring alongside whiskies from Scotland, Japan and America – which you can sample in a tasting flight surrounded by the bar’s collection of prehistoric artefacts. The tome of a menu also includes locally inspired cocktails, as well as deli plates and larger bites such as a Cape Grim beef burger.

After a day scouting the area’s heritage hot spots, there’s no better place to unwind than at the Story Bar, the hotel’s refined watering hole. Expect a huge focus on Tassie booze, a laid-back menu of hits from the Old Wharf Restaurants, and live music every Friday and Saturday night.
