Have you ever stopped in at Coldstream’s gourmet Gateway Estate on your way to the Yarra Valley? You won’t recognise the farmgate since it reopened back in December 2022.
It’s relaunched as Gateway, a new cafe, provedore and temperature-controlled greenhouse where you can pick your own organic fruit and veg, herbs and flowers. Just grab a trolley, wander the aisles and pluck whatever seasonal specialty takes your fancy.
“The experience of Gateway is engaging and hands-on,” CEO Joe Basile said in a statement. “Unlike traditional supermarkets, customers are picking their ingredients from the soil themselves, rather than a shelf.”
If you can’t find what you’re looking for in the 4000-square-metre greenhouse, the adjoining provedore will fill the gaps – it’s stocked with produce from local suppliers.
And then there’s the cafe. With huge windows looking into the greenhouse, the seasonally focused menu is centred around what’s grown on-site. You might find ricotta-and-lemon pancakes, tomato-and-shallot tarts and spicy Turkish eggs.
And in the future, Basile hopes to host home cooking, baking and DIY classes.
