East Terrace Continental

East Terrace Continental (or ETC if you’re a regular) is one of Adelaide’s busiest cafes, easily recognisable by its trademark red umbrellas that line the street side when it’s open.

Since 2001, it has served favourites such as the Rusty Eggs (spinach, prosciutto, hollandaise and a drizzle of Napolitana sauce), and stacks of fluffy buttermilk pancakes with maple syrup. Much of the appeal lies in the menu’s broad selection, which includes everything from chunky potato wedges with sour cream, to Mediterranean-inspired salads.

After changing hands in 2015, new owners Sam Izzo and Joe Bueti expanded the cafe, capitalising on its prime location and balcony views overlooking the Rundle and Rymil parklands.

The addition of night-time trading in 2016 brought with it a selection of 15 Italian-style tapas dishes, along with wood-fired pizzas and simple pasta dishes.

The heritage building, a former art studio, has also been updated, with exposed-brick walls and an upstairs bar and entertainment area that doubles as a registered Fringe venue during March. The original wooden chairs and tables remain, along with the cafe’s easy familiarity and characteristic charm.
