It’s the first day of autumn, the sun is out and festival season is in full swing. With our streets humming louder than at any other time of the year, we thought there no better time to get out there ourselves. Look out for our inaugural print paper in cafes, bars, shops and restaurants around town today.

Once you’re inside and seated, flicking through the pages with your coffee in hand, take note of your surroundings. It’s possible one of the young creatives on our cover page designed them; the bar you’re at, the menu you’re eyeing, the kitsch plate you’re Instagramming. Together with some like-minded restaurateurs these local talents are shifting perceptions of design and what a bar and restaurant in Adelaide can be.

It’s part of a wider cultural shift happening across the city. In this issue we speak to some of the innovators and risk-takers driving this change.

We all know South Australia produces incredible wine, but in the past 12 months a formidable, experimental local gin industry has boomed; one that’s using distinctly Australian botanicals such as saltbush, muntries, finger lime and Tasmanian pepper berry. We speak with the distillers putting SA gin on the map.

Sister Gallery has opened its doors to a whole new generation of Adelaide artists. Taking over Fontanelle’s Bowden premises, gallery curators Mia Van den Bos and Ashleigh D’Antonio are focused on young, emerging and under-represented artists. We sit down with the pair to discuss their vision for Adelaide’s arts community.

As Adelaide Festival’s Riverbank Palais prepares to open, we talk to its designer, Robert Cousins, about paying homage to an almost-forgotten chapter in Adelaide’s history.

Speaking of the festival, as it and Womadelaide kick off, and we step into week three of the Fringe, there’s no shortage of things to do this month. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by choice, we’ve made it simple with our personalised festival guide.

We also have a recipe by Superfish chef Jordan Jeavons – perfect for a balmy autumn evening. So take some time out, sit down for a good read and then get out and enjoy the city.
