Sibling restaurateurs Peter and Silvia De Marco are going old school. Their latest venture, Chicco Palms, is a throwback to vintage cool in a surprising suburban location.
The pair, together with co-owners Phillip Tropeano, Natalie Albany, Ernesto Sestito and Domenic Maurici (who between them run Pizza e Mozzarella Bar, Borsa Pasta Cucina and Chicken and Pig) now hold the lease to the former Barnacle Bill on Henley Beach Road. Peter says he took on the site to challenge traditional perceptions of the west, where he has lived for years.
Chicco Palms will be “not a pub, but a pub” – a place where people can relax with a few drinks, maybe a pizza, or something more.

SUBSCRIBE NOWThe brief is “1950s Italo-American cuisine” which Peter explains as baloney sandwiches, spaghetti and meatballs and Roman-style, thin-crust pizzas. A built-to-spec wood oven that took six months to create will soon arrive from Naples. The bar will pour fruity cocktails alongside all the classics, with local wine and beers.
James Brown of Adelaide’s MASH Design (Africola) is fabricating a custom, mid-century modern fit-out to complete the “Palm Springs” experience.
Nordburger’s recent expansion into Frewville is along similar fish-and-chip-shop-come-mid-century-kitsch lines. Trend alert? We’re watching closely to see what becomes of the project, which we’re filling under “cheesy-cool”.
Chicco Palms will open in January and operate Tuesdays to Sundays.
