You know you’re on to a good thing when your pop-up dinners sell out before you’ve had a chance to promote them.

Dates for South West Supper Club’s new series at Lindes Lane have been announced – but you need to act fast to secure a seat.

Co-organiser Sarah Feehan and chef Tim Bourke started the events in September 2015 and are still surprised by demand.

“The first night at Paddy’s Lantern booked out before we’d officially published it,” Feehan says. “It felt like a big family dinner. I’ve had emails from people who want to book out four in a row.”

A dream team runs the relaxed five-course meals. Feehan has worked the floor at Copenhagen’s Noma and Melbourne’s Attica, Noma Sydney and Adelaide’s Orana. Her partner Tim Bourke has worked in fine dining since he was 18, including Sydney’s Wildfire, Establishment, Jaspers (for which he was hatted), and London’s The Ledbury.

The couple met in 2011 working at Kangaroo Island’s luxury Southern Ocean Lodge.

“It was a quick romance,” Feehan says laughing. Their positive energy in and out of the kitchen is captured in the vibe at South West Supper Club shindigs. “We’re best when we’re working together,” Feehan says. “When we’re not working together something is missing. For most people it’s often the opposite.”

The gist of the dinners is simple; Bourke creates a menu using South Australian produce supplied by the likes of Rachel McMillan’s Scoop SA farm gate, Richard Gunner and Kangaroo Island producers. “It’s five courses and a snack at an affordable price,” Feehan says. “It’s winter, so this time I can see things like mushrooms, root vegetables and Jerusalem artichokes on the menu. Dishes that are dark and rich.”

Expect close encounters of the chef kind. “It’s about breaking down that barrier between front and back of house. Customers love having that personal contact with the person cooking for them.”

Local wines match each course and Bourke prides himself on flexibility in the kitchen and making sure everyone has a cracking time.

“Tim says ‘you don’t need a theme, just give everyone really good food, every time’,” Feehan says.

The pair plans to open its own neighbourhood restaurant but for now, regular pop-ups keep fans sated.

“I came back [from Noma] and went, ‘What’s the rush?’” Feehan says. “We’re happy doing these pop-ups and the reception has been really good.”

South West Supper Club will be held at Lindes Lane on the first Monday of every month. $65/person. Call 0449539086 to book.
