Stepping inside Mister Sunshine’s is like donning sepia-lens glasses that flash you back to an American country diner (the type that serves its burger with a steak knife stuck through it). That said, there's something recognisably Aussie about the place, too.

It might be the familiar sunflower crockery your grandma could have owned; the staff’s imperturbable attitude to the place being totally chockas; or that the coffee is good.

The square-ish former snack bar was revamped just the right amount by the initial owners - designer Caren Elliss and ceramicist Alison Smiles. Elliss' pendant lights still hang over the counter today. They're supplemented with mismatched kitchen tables, chairs, wall art and servingware, which all bestow an air of unassuming kitsch and sincerity.

These days Lauro Martire (East Terrace Continental) is the current Mister Sunshine.

The cheap-and-cheerful menu runs all day and includes a hearty breakfast burger; French toast; sauteed field mushrooms; house baked beans; and fresh juices. Port Elliot roaster De Groot provides the coffee.
