After opening Limes Hotel, Damian Griffiths wanted to keep transforming the neglected end of the Valley. He secured two rundown houses across the road, and Alfred & Constance was born.

Paying homage to their heritage, the two buildings still look like quaint Queenslanders from the outside, but inside there’s five diverse venues.

The Alfred Cafe (open from 7am) and The Vanguard each offer food, while the three bars each have their own theme: Tunes Bar is like a laidback lounge room, White Lightening is Tiki and Fever Club is Alfred & Constance’s answer to a nightclub.

Located on the sunny ground floor patio, Alfred has become the go-to stop for local workers and residents thanks to its great coffee and speedy service. At the Vanguard, linger over lunch and/or end the workday with a roast pork roll – suckling pig slow cooked whole on a wood fire, and lathered in apple sauce and red wine jus – paired with a cold Kirin, White Rabbit or Little Creatures Pale.

When the sun goes down, head upstairs to Tunes Bar for a glass of red next to the fireplace or seek out White Lightening where the Piña Colada served in a pineapple with a kitschy umbrella strikes exactly the right chord.

If you find yourself still kicking past midnight on a Friday or Saturday, make your way to the basement to revel in the 70s glitz of Fever Club.
