We have the Romans to thank for conceiving the art of gelato. And we can thank Davey Mac’s David McCowan for transporting us back to the heart of Italy with just one lick.

McCowan’s Black Rock ice-cream parlour is a tiny bit retro, but it's pared back and understated so as not to distract from the main attraction – the voluptuous mountains of gelati and impressive iced deserts.

Each batch of soft, creamy gelato and sorbetto is made on-site by the Gelatiere himself. There are 40 fresh flavours on offer, with 12 revolving spots reserved for special-edition flavours. Master of classic favourites such as vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, pistachio, and lemon, McGowan also offers daring options including cinnamon, chilli chocolate and a very popular liquorice.

It’s the Ferrero Rocher, however, that has attained cult status and punters from all over Melbourne flock to the Rock before it runs out for the day. It's loved by young and old, and believe us, tears are shed when they miss out.
