Shanghai Village
A dumpling lover’s haven, this double-storey Chinatown gem is arguably the busiest dumpling restaurant in the city. The large red door nestled into the heritage facade opens onto a hectic first floor, with scattered seating, bright pink walls and waiters rushing about with steaming plates of piping hot dumplings in hand.
Dumplings come steamed or fried and reach your table mere moments after you order. Most fillings and combinations you could think of are available, as well as a number you probably couldn't.
For non-dumpling options, dozens of menu pages are devoted to Chinese dishes (as the name suggests, mostly Shanghai-style), including vegetarian options that are sure to satisfy. Steamy Shanghai fried rice and Chinese broccoli drizzled with oyster sauce are great dumpling accompaniments.
Incredibly cheap, this is no-frills dining at its best. With plates of 15 dumplings for under $10, Shanghai Village’s popularity lies in its speedy service, cheap and cheerful food, buzzing atmosphere and handy BYO policy. A fun, bustling setting for small group gatherings and celebrations; Shanghai Village’s convenient CBD location, right in the heart of Chinatown, makes it the perfect precursor to a night out or a quick after-work meal before heading home for a night in.
