It’s said that good things come in small packages, and also to those who wait. Both proverbs ring true at Mitte, one of North Fitzroy’s most petite culinary icons. Although tucked away in the back streets a few minutes walk from the area’s bustling brunch strip, Mitte’s breakfast offerings, such as the poached eggs with Middle Eastern chickpea bake, draw a massive crowd, so be prepared to wait. But, once you’ve taken a seat at one of the communal tables and have sampled the organic coffee, you’ll be glad that you stayed.

Despite the Germanic origins of its name, Mitte offers modern Australian cuisine with an epicurean flair. The luscious vanilla and cinnamon poached pears and apples, topped with a macadamia nut crumble and served with mascarpone, brings in locals and breakfast nomads alike. The decor is minimal at Mitte, but the modesty of this diminutive corner-store aesthetic is all part of the charm.
