Fifty beer taps, 32 craft brews, free music two-to-four nights a week, and as much pizza as you can eat. Sound familiar? Replacing Smith Street’s A Bar Called Barry, Forester’s Beer Hall is being brought to us by the team behind Clifton Hill's Terminus (not to be confused with the just-revamped Abbotsford Terminus), and the Royston – that back-street beauty in Richmond. The group (Russell, Stephen and Paul Griggs, plus their sister, Alison Clarke) also owned A Bar Called Barry for 14 years. “It was a great business for a long time, but it had sort of run its race,” Russell says.
The live music element will be a big component of the new venue. The bands will play on a raised platform in front of a giant, gold shell, an original piece from the 1920s.
“The idea is that it’s a 1920s speakeasy on a grand scale. We’ll have bands play every Friday and Saturday, and the music is American, rockabilly, blues and funk,” Russell says.
