How’s the irony? Back in 2017 Moreland City Council received plans for an eight-storey development in Brunswick that would have shared a wall with Howler’s bandroom. The live music venue was never consulted about the ill-conceived project, which council later rejected.
Now Howler has acquired that same site at 8 Michael Street, Brunswick, to open Howlerwood, a sunny Palm Springs-inspired beer garden, where dogs are welcome. The 150-seat venue is only temporary, but feels like a good parry nonetheless. At this stage the team is hoping to stay open for six months, weather depending.
The menu is geared for summertime thirst-crushing with kitschy boozy slushies, including watermelon Margarita, peach-bourbon iced tea, banana daiquiri and a Blue Hawaii featuring fresh-pressed pineapple juice and Australian-made blue curacao. Then there are jugs of Paloma and rosé sangria, plus single serves of Aperol Spritz and Kahlua-spiked iced lattes. Sessionable tinnies and interesting natural wines round out the drinks list.
