Next year marks a decade since Raph Rashid first introduced Melburnians to Beatbox Kitchen. It was one of the city’s first food trucks, and it’s still one of the best. Last year he finally added a permanent location to the family, which already includes several Taco Trucks, doughnut shop All Day Donuts and its night-time alter-ego, fried-chicken specialist Juanita Peaches.

Now Rashid’s bringing the party to 130 Gertrude Street, which until recently was home to Donut Shop Coffee and Donuts.

The menu at Beatbox Kitchen Fitzroy will be “very similar” to Brunswick. Mainstays include the 170-gram, grass-fed Raph and Chilly Billy burgers, plus Shroom and Veg Supreme burgers (there are separate grills for meat and not-meat). Brunswick’s squishy, umami, dinner-roll-sized cheeseburgers will also be making the trip, albeit in a larger format. And Rashid is planning to bring back a chicken-schnitzel sandwich from Beatbox’s early days.

“When I started Beatbox Kitchen I always used to make chicken-schnitzel sandwiches,” he says. “I got kind of obsessed with the burger, so we’re finally getting back to our roots.”

Salads will also be on the menu, including a cos Caesar, and a truffle oil and crispy noodle salad inspired by a recipe Rashid found on the back of a packet of Chang’s-brand noodles.

But here’s the bit former Donut Shop regulars have no doubt been waiting for: the new site will have doughnuts from day one, delivered fresh from All Day each morning. As soon as Rashid gets a handle on the small kitchen, they’ll be made on-site.

Beatbox Kitchen Fitzroy will open in September 2018 at 130 Gertrude Street, Fitzroy.
