For a few years, Melbourne's electronic music scene was hurting for a lack of independent city festivals. It was easy enough to see acts such as Skrillex or deadmau5 outside of a club, but much harder to see someone like Bonobo. Let Them Eat Cake made inroads the past two years on New Year’s Day, presenting a more discerning electronic music festival at the lush grounds of Werribee Park Mansion. Now comes HOLEANDCORNER, a new festival for Melbourne and Sydney from Fünf Touring and the Mushroom Group's music and entertainment company, Illusive.

The two gigs will be held indoors, the first on June 7 at Melbourne's Shed 14 warehouse in the Docklands. Sydney's Home Nightclub will get the same treatment the following day. But as the sheer diversity of the line-up, and the 12-hour runtime indicates, these are far from normal club events. UK indie-rockers Hotchip will play a DJ set, as will singer/producer Matthew Dear, who's also known for his heavy take on techno and for his bleak pop sensibilities. Treading in the footsteps of ’90s superstars Sasha & Digweed, progressive house giants Henry Saiz and Guy J are also set to bring their subtly hypnotic sounds to the festival.

Rounding out the list of announced acts are Xosar and Cosmin TRG. Both acts inhabit the fringe of the house/techno sphere, often confounding music journalists with their genre-straddling records. But one thing they reliably provide is dance-floor ready beats. And this might be a key point for HOLEANDCORNER. More tours are promised if this first one is a success, but with such an eclectic line-up, something will have to tie it all together. It might be the punters and their willingness to dance, so long as there's a beat. Then again, the organisers aren't leaving it to chance, planning extravagant décor and lighting installations designed to make HOLEANDCORNER a true spectacle.
