Reynold Poernomo rose to fame as a fan favourite on season seven of Masterchef Australia in 2015, wowing viewers with his artful desserts. Shortly after his run on the show, the “dessert king” opened Koi Dessert Bar in Sydney with his brothers Ronald and Arnold Poernomo, who is a judge on Masterchef Indonesia, and their mother, chef Ike Malada.

On Friday July 19 the family will finally open Koi Dessert Bar in Melbourne, six years after they opened the Sydney store. “We’ve been wanting to come to Melbourne for years. To us, the city represents the pinnacle of creativity and culinary excellence in Australia,” Reynold says.

Koi Melbourne will be at Queen & Collins, the precinct on the corner of Queen and Collins streets in the CBD that also houses Reine, La Rue and cocktail den Purple Pit.

The team will offer celebration cakes designed to serve a group as well as smaller cakes and desserts. There will be a changing line-up of over 150 different desserts, six of which will be Melbourne exclusives. The Melbourne cakes include the Carlton, which uses pandan, coconut, mango and almond; the Bananas, made using mis, vanilla, salted caramel and of course bananas; and the NGK, which is short for “National Gallery of Koi” and uses mirabelle plum, apricot, mint and ume.

There’ll also be a new dessert dining concept from Koi pastry chef Adeline Campestre, where guests will be able to dine in the kitchen on a selection of desserts and watch the kitchen team in action.

Koi Dessert Bar Melbourne is expected to open at 100 Queen Street on Friday July 19.
