A week into Melbourne’s sixth lockdown, with no obvious end in sight, good food is once again proving to be the ongoing highlight of our home-bound existence. Here are seven options we’re eyeing off for this weekend, and beyond.

Point Leo at Home
In addition to a more casual bistro and wine terrace, this Mornington Peninsula winery is home to Laura, one of Victoria’s best restaurants. Culinary director Josep Espuga (who was promoted from sous chef in March) has combined the three venues into one super-powered delivery service, sending ready-to-assemble meals as far as Port Melbourne, Carlton and Kew. Place your order by 4pm to receive it the next day. The luxurious menu includes a carrot souffle, lobster flambe with local Red Hill truffles and Noilly Prat vermouth sauce, sticky char siu pork belly, five-gram tins of Beluga caviar and a Valrhona chocolate mousse.

James’ Dinner For Two
Located in South Melbourne, James is a Japanese-leaning wine bar that very appropriately shares a laneway with fine ceramic retailer Made in Japan. Its new dinner for two menu is comprised of eight intriguing dishes, such as potato cake with vinegar salt and black garlic, pork doughnuts with black apple jam, smoked chicken with creamed silverbeet, and cheesecake with caramelised soy sauce. Order via Instagram DM for before 5pm for pick up between 6pm–8pm every evening, or local area delivery for $15 extra.

The Everleigh x Congress Sausage Sizzle
If you live within five klicks of Fitzroy, you’re in for a treat this weekend. Landmark cocktail bar the Everleigh has linked up with the team at Collingwood wine bar Congress to put on a fancy-pants sausage sizzle. From 3pm on Saturday, visit the Everleigh’s downstairs canteen (150–156 Gertrude Street) to snag venison sausages with onion, artichoke jus and black garlic ketchup, mushroom snags with Brussels spout sauerkraut and curry ketchup, and – drumroll – Negroni doughnuts. The Ev will also be selling its extensive range of bottled cocktails.

The Beast of Brunswick Street Barbeque
Also in Fitzroy and also on Saturday, rock’n’roll burger bar the B.East is putting on a New Orleans street food barbeque. Head down between midday and 5.30pm for bourbon-glazed Cajun ribs, jambalaya croquettes, pit-smoked street corn, grilled oysters with creole butter, and Bananas Foster – grilled banana, salted rum caramel, pecan crumble and cream. Booze will also be ready to take home, in the form of Margarita slushies, blueberry Hurricanes and Negroni jelly shots.

Neighbourhood Wine Fat Mossel Clam and Crab Box
After a streetside barbeque last weekend, the team at Carlton’s Neighbourhood Wine has followed up with these two-person, $150 seafood-packed hampers. Order by 9pm for next-day delivery. Each hamper includes half a loaf of sourdough, plus English muffins, Yarra Valley salmon roe, creme fraiche and chives; diamond clams with Turkish chilli butter; mussels with potato veloute; globe artichoke and Olasagasti anchovy ravioli; fennel and leek gratin; and pear, mandarin and chocolate crumble with chantilly cream.

Robata at Home
You have to feel for the crew at Robata, the San Telmo Group’s new Japanese yakitori and kushiyaki bar. The restaurant opened less than a week before the current lockdown began. Not much time to build a following. Try it out with one of two meal boxes, available Friday to Sunday throughout lockdown. The first contains a handroll with fresh tuna and salmon, chicken thigh yakitori with spring onion, chicken meatball yakitori, leek kushiyaki, and yaki onigiri (grilled rice ball) with pickled cabbage and soy. The second is made up of assorted pickles; tuna and salmon sashimi; pork katsu with cabbage, red miso sauce and Japanese mustard; cucumber with shiso, sesame, shredded nori and pine nuts; and yaki onigiri with pickled cabbage and yuzu marshmallow. Order before 5pm for next-day delivery to Melbourne metro suburbs.

Leonardo’s Pizza Palace
In Carlton, the folks at Leonardo’s are transforming into Palazzo Di Panuozzo, a takeaway kitchen devoted to a little-known pizza-sandwich hybrid. Originating in Naples, the panuozzo sees pizza dough stretched into a foot-long sub, baked and stuffed with the kinds of things you usually find on top of a pizza. It’s an open calzone, essentially. Walk up for panuozzos filled with venison meatballs and spicy diavolo sauce; eggplant, sugo, ricotta and basil; and layers of mortadella. In true Leonardo’s style, playful snacks are also on the menu: cacio e pepe (cheese and pepper) potato cakes, fried cheese curds and mascarpone-piped cannoli. The pizzeria’s banging takeaway Pina Coladas (rum, cold-pressed pineapple juice, coconut and lime) are also making a comeback. Open from 10am on Saturday, until sold out.
