With its sprawling outdoor area taking over the most part of Eaton Mall and a cavernous interior that’s perpetually packed, this Oakleigh cafe genuinely qualifies as a local institution. It even publishes its own quarterly magazine.

Apart from the almost obscenely large selection of luminous cakes and impeccable Greek pastries, Vanilla also does classic savoury Mediterranean fare. Think eggplant moussaka, house-made cheesy tiropita, or a farmyard-spanning meat platter with chicken, pork, lamb, beef rissoles and loukanika served with chips and salad. Warning: you’ll need a partner to help you tackle it.
