Set amid the hustle and bustle of the Prahran Market is a petite pocket of Greece. The shop may be humble in size, but its walls are bursting with fresh, varied produce. While Sweet Greek offers a multitude of desserts, there is also a mixture of savoury dishes that keeps both locals and out-of-towners rushing back for more.

Alongside imports such as aromatic Cretan oregano, haloumi, Dodoni feta and the best Greek yoghurt, the shop’s real standouts are the dishes that owner Kathy Tsaples makes and bakes in her own kitchen. Her food not only attracts those after takeaway options but also larger groups wanting home-style catering.

Options include walnut and cinnamon baklava, fragrant chunks of galaktoboureko (a sweet semolina custard dessert), rich vegetarian moussaka and summery vegetables stuffed with herbs and rice. Dessert-laden trestle tables boast packets of almond-flaked amigthalota and powdery Turkish delight. The authentic Greek sweets are certainly popular, but it is Tsaples’ scrumptious spanakopita that is the daily sell-out.
