In 2007, Joanne Mamone and Rob Burness left their careers as a wine educator and sommelier respectively to open Chapel Street Cellars. It offers interesting and beautiful wines as well as a sit-down component for people to enjoy them on the spot.
With the rise in popularity of craft beer and cider in Australia, Mamone and Burness adapted their shop to cater to demand. They began importing drinks from all over the world and soon had too many to count. The beers rotate constantly, so you won’t likely find repeats.
If there's something you’re after, Mamone and Burness are more than happy to get it in. They are the Australian importers for many overseas brands. Stock prices prices range from $5 to a 41 per cent beer that retails for $210.
If you thought the beer shop that lets you drink inside it couldn’t get better, it also has a BYO food policy, so you can bring in takeaway from surrounding Chapel Street. You can also choose from warmed olives, corn chips with salsa, a cheese board or oysters from the snack menu.
The shop also runs alcohol-themed events including beer tastings, cocktail challenges and Beer Club – where people can taste and learn what makes a beer a lager compared to an IPA, or a draught over a pilsner.
These events are also a fixture at Chapel Street Cellars' outlet at Prahran Market, which opened in 2016.
