Set and forget – it’s a motto that rarely leads us astray when it comes to dining out. Set menus take away that pesky back and forth of deciding what to eat, leaving the important decisions to those who know best (it’s not called a chef’s menu for nothing). This style of dining also lends itself to value, with $100 often opening up a multi-course feast (particularly in the case of the menus here), while the focus on shared courses reaffirms just how unifying good food can be.

To make things even easier, we’ve gathered up five of the best set menus from around Perth with a variety of cuisines to suit just about everyone – and all under $100. Set and forget, right?

Fleur at the Royal

As far as pubs go, it’s hard to top The Royal, a massive 19th-century stunner that has long drawn crowds. Fortunately for Perth, the addition of French bistro-ish diner, Fleur, only ups the ante again. Chef Logan Place's $95 set menu tips its hat to plenty of bistro classics, combined with Place’s fine-dining touches. You’ll have the choice of kangaroo carpaccio or scallops, along with market fish with a black garlic beurre blanc (a French butter sauce) and a muscovado sugar tart to finish.

Long Chim

Chef and Long Chim owner David Thompson doesn’t play it safe with his Thai cuisine. Following 30 years in Bangkok and a Michelin star in London, Thompson brings the fragrant aromatics and searing heat of Thai cuisine to Australia, keeping authentic flavours and spice intact. Long Chim’s Perth outpost is in the basement of the State Treasury building (there’s also a Sydney spot). The $85 maa long chim set menu comes with nine dishes, including miang prawns with coconut, pineapple pork curry, chilli and cumin-spike lamb ribs, and sweet black sticky rice for dessert.

Lulu La Delizia

Lulu La Delizia is chef and owner Joel Valvasori-Pereza’s ode to a deep, familial connection to pasta. Named for his grandmother, Lulu’s is a Subiaco treasure featuring mainly northern Italian dishes, drawing on the best of regions like Friuli (Valvasori-Pereza’s grandmother’s home town) and neighbouring Emilia-Romagna. The pasta specials change regularly and are known to draw a crowd, but the signature menu ($89 for six courses, most of which aren’t available on the à la carte menu) is the real star. You might get kingfish collar with pizzelle, square fazzoletti pasta with peas and braised capretto (the meat of a young goat), or smoked pork and herb terrine, but the menu is constantly rotating so you won’t know for sure until your first course rolls out.

Le Rebelle

With Le Rebelle, owners and Perth hospo veterans Sarah and Liam Atkinson easily blend sleek wine bar and neighbourhood bistro stylings, all tied together with a French thread. You’ll find a sizable wine list (over 100 bottles at last count) and a separate menu of local and international ewe, goat and cow’s milk cheeses. It’s definitely worth going for the $95 “carte blanche” set menu, a popular choice among the dinner crowds. Leave it up to the chef to decide for the table, with both shared and individual courses of Le Rebelle classics that might include the cult-hit crab toast (brioche topped with crab, shallots, pickled celery and mayonnaise), house-made ricotta gnocchetti, or fillet steak au poivre with frites.

Manuka Woodfire Kitchen

There’s no mistaking the theme at Manuka Woodfire Kitchen, especially as the dishes start to come out. The focus here is fire. Leaning on the natural flavour enhancement of the flame, chef Kenny McHardy wields his woodfired oven to bring out the most in a rotating cast of local, seasonal ingredients. It’s the kind of restaurant where you’ll want to try everything, so the best way to get a sense of McHardy’s style is to opt for the $72 six-course tasting menu. You might start with the chef’s fire-baked flatbread and condiments like smoky baba ganoush, followed by wood-roasted duck, sirloin with smoked butter, or McHardy might instead take you off-piste with items not listed on the menu. You’ll just have to see what happens on the night.
