Sunday at Sydney Opera House
After a sold-out season in Melbourne, Sunday – a play about arts philanthropist Sunday Reed – is having its Sydney premiere this October. Written by award-winning playwright Anthony Weigh, Sunday focuses on the intertwined stories of the Heide circle, the modernist artists that ruled Australia’s art scene in the 1930s, ’40s and ’50s – including Sidney Nolan, Joy Hester and Albert Tucker.
Directed by Sarah Goodes, the play explores the infamous love triangle between Sunday, played by Nikki Shiels, Sunday’s husband John Reed (Matt Day) and painter Sidney Nolan (James O’Connell). Ratidzo Mambo takes on the role of Joy Hester, a celebrated modernist painter and Sunday’s closest confidant, and Jude Hyland plays Reed’s young son Sweeney.
The Melbourne Theatre Company production received five-star reviews from the Guardian and Theatre Thoughts.
