Sydney Dance Company: PPY24 Revealed
Each year, Sydney Dance Company offers emerging dancers from around Australia the chance to train in a professional environment. The Pre-Professional Year program is a full-time dance course with the renowned dance company – and this year’s graduates are ready to show what they’ve learned. PPY24 Revealed puts the spotlight on the program’s 2024 cohort with a suite of performances at Parramatta’s Riverside Theatres on November 30 and December 1.
The program sees the dancers perform works by a range of Australian choreographers. Miranda Wheen’s A Library of Extraordinary Things celebrates the small pleasures and beautiful minutia of the everyday, while Cass Mortimer Eipper’s Pattern Pulse uses AI to map patterns and rhythms of human life. Prue Lang’s The Language of Poppy draws inspiration from the natural world; similarly, Bangarra Dance Theatre artistic director Frances Rings’s Water sketches part 1 & 2 explores the concept of water in the face of the current climate emergency. And James Batchelor’s Circulation traces the lineage of contemporary dance history through three different generations of Australian dancers.
The program also includes an excerpt of Sydney Dance Company’s 2 One Another, choreographed by the company’s artistic director Rafael Bonachela. Originally debuted in 2012, this vivid study of human interaction features a pulsing soundtrack by Nick Wales, seamlessly blending baroque and electronic music.
