Yes, the weather is getting gloomy. But if you’re looking for a shining light among the dreary skies and blustery wind, remember that if nothing else, at least you can wear more clothes at once. Layering is key in autumn, and the right staple denim pieces can make constructing different looks a whole lot easier.

Grey denim is softer than black, and more formal than blue. We asked Lisa Hamilton, who runs fashion blog See Want Shop, for her tips on how to style grey denim for different occasions.

Early morning coffee run
Roll out of bed and slip into some stretchy grey skinny jeans and a T-shirt to keep it simple. “I like to pair them with my favourite runners and throw on an oversized knit to combat cooler mornings,” Hamilton says. She also suggests a snug beanie if you want to keep bed-hair under wraps.

Weekend breakfast
Choosing an item of clothing with a similar colour to your jeans can tie a whole outfit together. In this case, Hamilton chose a grey-and-white blanket scarf to complement the light-grey jeans. “I like to add a touch of colour with a tonal coat,” she says. Here she’s opted for navy, but burgundy is also a go-to colour for her. Low ankle boots and sunglasses complete the look.

The office
Grey denim instantly becomes more formal with the addition of a blazer. A soft lace camisole and flat leather loafers are comfy additions, which Hamilton says is important to keep in mind for a day at the desk.

Dinner date
Hamilton suggests dressing up high-waisted grey skinny jeans with heeled boots and a leather biker jacket. She’s opted for a monochrome look here, with an outfit that features black, white and grey, with metal detailing. “Pull your hair back into a low messy bun and top it off with a wide-brimmed fedora,” she says.

Cocktails with friends
It’s okay to pair grey with grey, so long as they’re different shades. When heading out at night with friends, Hamilton likes to wear “a pair of sky-high strappy stilettos and bare a little skin with an off-the-shoulder blouse”. Your lips can be your statement piece; Hamilton suggests a bright-red lip colour.
