Last month we reported that pay-as-you-feel restaurant, Lentil As Anything, was at risk of permanent closure – and urgently needed to raise $150,000 to avoid going into administration.

The social enterprise provides meals to the hungry using a payment system where patrons can “pay as they feel”, or via gifts of labour or skills. But after spending 20 years helping those in need – across locations in Melbourne and Sydney – Lentil As Anything needed our help.

The team set up a Go Fund Me page – titled “Save Lentil As Anything” – to combat the “serious monetary shortfalls and large historic debt”. And the response was overwhelming.

The original goal of $150,000 has been smashed out of the ballpark. At the time of publishing, there have been almost $350,000 in donations from more than 6000 people.

“We are feeling so touched and overwhelmed by your generosity … From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for saving Lentil from the pandemic,” a statement on the Go Fund Me page reads.

“You have given us a way to continue our never-more-critical food relief and social impact programs, and avoid going into administration.”

While the fundraising goal has been well surpassed, the Go Fund Me campaign will remain active. The initial $300,000 will help guard against the imminent threat of administration, while all additional donations will go towards social programs, including food relief, until the restaurants can reopen.
