The Best Restaurants in Bondi

On first visit it's hard to look past the golden sand and the waves of the beach. But explore a little further and you'll find Bondi has more going for it than seaside frolicking – you just need to know where to look. Here's a guide to where to eat, whether you want plates of seafood tossed through pasta, Northern Italian-style piadinas or a view to distract you from your food.

  • This elevated vantage of Bondi’s sloshing surf is one of Australia’s great views – one a less conscientious restaurateur might easily lean on. Not Maurice Terzini, who’s been pushing his resplendent Italian diner to greater and greater heights since 2002.

  • This “rickety-chic” institution has been winning over Sydneysiders with its ever-changing seasonal menu since 1993. It’s packed with ultra-fresh produce from the restaurant’s own farm in the Blue Mountains – check the restaurant chalkboard details. Cheerfully charming and dangerously good.

  • Whether you’re barefoot or in heels, ravenous or merely peckish, the refurbished Bondi Pavilion has you covered on all fronts. Hit the refined (but relaxed) dining room for Asian-influenced dishes; the terrace for casual pub eats; and the beachside kiosk for classic fish’n’chips.

  • This spot offers a hint of the flavours you might find on Mexico's Caribbean coast. It's all about boutique tequila and DIY tacos: you select all of the fillings you want and assemble the taco yourself. It's so simple – but so fun and practical. We wish it was more commonplace around town.

  • Even a top chef like Matt Moran can’t resist the fish’n’chipper format. His breezy spot, tucked under North Bondi RSL, enjoys enviable ocean views that perfectly compliment the seafood-forward menu and stellar Margaritas.

  • At this pretty corner spot just back from Bondi Beach, one of the city’s best Italian chefs is serving perfectly puffy woodfired pizzas and a Sydney-famous porchetta roll. Plus pastas, carafes of wine and tiramisu.

  • Extensive antipasti, breakfast, and a range of classics from a celebrated chef.

  • The beachside outpost for one of Sydney’s seminal cafes.

  • There isn’t really anything this breezy bar and diner can’t do. There’s a Mediterranean thread running throughout, from the flavours on the menu to the day-to-night vibe. A spot on the footpath can't be beaten at golden hour.

  • The sequel to Chaco’s Darlinghurst ramen joint brings all the favourites to Bondi, including the chilli-coriander and yuzu-scallop ramens. There are also a few Bondi-only numbers, such as yakitori, prawn fried rice and pre-batched cocktails.

  • Set within a former tram stop, Corner House has been a go-to for Bondi locals for more than a decade. Cosy, casual and with enough variety to please, it’s a fun chapter in the building’s story that involves rustic Italian fare and on-point cocktails.

  • An all-day diner for before or after the beach.

  • Pizza, seafood and cocktails.

  • An elevated fish'n'chipper from the team behind Fishbowl. Pull up a chair in the light-filled dining room for Mediterranean-inspired bar snacks, or settle on a picnic rug in the neighbouring park with takeaway boxes.

  • A long-standing neighbourhood bistro in the heart of Bondi.

  • Get tacos, pizza and lime-green sliders in a space that spills onto a green-filled courtyard.

  • Middle Eastern cuisine done the modern way.

  • The owner of this cosy little French spot wants to bring the warmth of the Parisian bars and bistros he grew up with to the beach. Dine on French comfort food – including melty raclette and beef tartare with frites – as Edith Piaf is piped through the speakers.

  • Eat a perfectly cooked Cape Grim steak, then grab a couple more for home.

  • It’s always family night at this unpretentious Mexican spot, which boasts the same bright blue as Frida Kahlo’s house. Buy wine en route and order loaded quesadillas, nachos and tacos – including a knockout pork confit number.
