Superette Opens in Glenelg

When Georgy Keen noticed a series of empty shops in her neighbourhood she decided to combine her love for the area’s historic buildings with a lifelong desire to own her own corner store. “I was born in the wrong era,” she says, laughing. “You can go and get everything you need from a supermarket these days, but I think it’s nice to go somewhere where someone knows your name.”

Formerly home to La Musette Siphon Coffee Bar, the heritage-listed shopfront on the corner of Moseley and College streets was built in the 1930s. Dark woods and rich blues reflect the charm of the past. As does Keen’s community-minded approach. The shelves are lined with local small-batch products such as rillettes and paté from The Little Acre, long-ferment sour-dough from Hearth Bakery, hand-crafted ceramics by Sit Still Lauren and potted plants by Emma Sadie Thompson.

The menu focuses on all-day breakfast dishes such as Bircher muesli with fresh organic fruit, edible flowers and McCarthy’s Orchard nuts. And colourful open rugbrød (Danish rye bread) sandwiches topped with smashed avocado and pepitas; smoked salmon and crème fraîche; and organic plum with cottage cheese and cinnamon. There are also seasonal salads and soups to eat in-store or to take with you.

Two small tables provide seating outside where you can enjoy a full-bodied espresso made with D’Angelo beans or an organic blend from Monday’s.
