Finally: tofu, vegetables and meat alternatives are having their moment in the sun. Only a few years ago, vegetarians were an afterthought at many restaurants, forced into the neglected corners of meat-heavy menus to choose from all-too-familiar vego options. (We see you, pumpkin and feta salad.)

Nowadays, a handful of places are entirely meat-free, and plenty more have dedicated vegetarian (and vegan) menus. This is a growing list of our favourite vegetarian-friendly restaurants. They’re not all strictly vego, but all offer a substantial choices that go beyond the token lentil burger or salad.

  • Fill your plate, cafeteria-style, with any combo of up to 35 Mediterranean-style dishes (many of them vegan) including juicy stuffed tomatoes, spanakopita and orzo pasta. Dine in under a sea of yellow umbrellas, or take it away to enjoy at home.

  • A permanent home for some of the city's best vegan tacos, with slick wines, cocktails and Mexican beer to match.

  • Order veggies from the grill and bask in the outdoor terrace at this rebooted Brisbane favourite.

  • A tiny, whimsical bar inspired by Peter Pan.

  • This cafe and grocer has almost everything a vegan could ever want or need, from tofurkey to coconut yoghurt.
