A Look Inside: Pretend You’re in Sorrento, Italy, at the Conti’s Glamorous New Intercontinental Hotel

First was the monumental new public bar and beer garden. Then came well-known Melbourne chef Scott Pickett’s first regional fine diner, Audrey’s, as well as lavish late-night speak-easy Barlow.

But yesterday, the pièce de résistance was officially unveiled at the Conti in Sorrento, on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula: an extravagant Intercontinental hotel.

The seaside icon, now known as The Continental Sorrento, has undergone a renovation for the ages – in excess of $100 million – led by architecture studio Woods Bagot.

Blending luxurious Victorian and art deco details, the new 108-room hotel dials up the old-world glamour. There are rooms and suites (both one and two bedrooms) in the delightfully restored 1875 limestone building, or you can opt for a stay in the newly created wing with a private outdoor terrace. Expect plush velvet furnishings and freestanding tubs, while a raft of penthouse suites will open later this year.

There’s also a Mediterranean-inspired pool deck exclusively for guests, with million-dollar views out over Sorrento and the glistening Port Phillip Bay. Green-and-white striped furniture and chequerboard tiling give it Amalfi Coast vibes.

Still to come is the Aurora Spa & Bathhouse. Set to open within the precinct later this year, the state-of-the-art wellness centre will have a float room, hydrotherapy pools and several thermal experiences (including an “igloo” ice room) to level up your stay.
