In a statement posted to Instagram on Monday afternoon, Peoples Cafeteria co-owner Lachlan Bisset announced that “after two great years, our lease is up and we have chosen not to renew it … This was a hard call to make but the right one for our business. Peoples is our dream and we will miss it. We’ll miss the smell of incense and coffee in the morning, the neighbourhood buzz, and the plates of delicious and healthy tucker … At least we all got to have a two-year glimpse of the food utopia we planned. It’s sad to be leaving, but we are so proud of what we have done here because we have done a good thing.”
The self-described “socialist-themed, healthy cooking dive restaurant” first opened in 2021 in a barely refurbed Chinese restaurant, with healthy home-style cooking dished out in a self-serve salad bar. Peoples reintroduced dinner service in March this year, but that late-night service will not be available in their final week of operation.
However, it’s not all sad news. The restaurant has promised to pop up at various locations around Perth, with an appearance with at Mane Bottle Store’s WA Day Carpark Party already on the cards. And there are plans to manufacture their Big Buck chilli oil to sell in stores.
