We’ve already told you how to stay caffeinated on a regional road trip, but what to do when hunger strikes? If a chiko roll or wilted salad from a dodgy servo doesn’t appeal, a pie is the next obvious choice. Thankfully, there are plenty of good bakeries across the state – and most major regional towns have at least one. Here are six you should visit.
Margaret River Bakery
You must visit Margaret River Bakery at least once on every trip to Margs. Start with a big breakfast, then stock up on pies, cakes and bread for later. The avo toast is excellent, and the chocolate meringues are as big as your head.

Yallingup Woodfired Bread
Something of a south-west institution, Yallingup Woodfired Bread produces four types of sourdough and up to 1200 loaves per day during peak times. Loaves are baked to be ready in the afternoon, so we suggest arriving around 3pm. If you can’t make it to the bakery, Yallingup bread is also available in supermarkets and other outlets around the region.

Toodyay Bakery
Just over an hour’s drive north-east of Perth, Toodyay Bakery is a reliable stop for food and coffee. The 2016 winner of Australia’s best pastie also serves breakfast, lunch and a range of pies, breads and cakes. Worth the trip even if you’re not heading out of town.
Please note: Toodyay Bakery will be closed from December 24, 2024 and will reopen on January 21, 2025.

The Baker’s Hill Pie Shop
Thirty kilometres south of Toodyay Bakery is Baker’s Hill Pie Shop, which is almost 30 years old now. It has a range of sweets, pastries and pasties, but as the name would suggest, it’s famous for its pies. There’s a strong vegetarian selection (including satay veg, and spinach and sweet potato); the signature meat pie is the Burgundy (with red wine, mushrooms and onions). Save room for a vanilla slice.
