Sneaky Tony’s
Anthony Cornero Stralla aka “Tony the Hat” was a mobster caught running 1000 cases of rum during Prohibition. He lends his name to this speakeasy-style bar, which is part of Clint Nolan’s Lavish Habits group (Alabama Song, La Cholita, Joe’s Juice Joint).
Hidden behind an unmarked door down a Chinatown alleyway and only accessible via a knock on the door (on Friday and Saturday, you'll need a password which you can find on Facebook), Sneaky Tony’s is a tribute to these times. Gimmicky? Maybe, but it’s also kind of fun.
Once past the lengthy line, towering shelves stocked with more than 300 varieties of rum greet you. The knowledgeable bartenders are more than happy to guide you through the offerings. So you might drink a 12-year Dominican, served straight up. Or maybe a spiced rum shaken with blood orange and maraschino.
Snatch a booth or pull up a stool at the bar in the low-lit, exposed-brick saloon to shout your order. Just choose wisely: with spirits of all ages, some selections can break the bank. Those who don’t like rum are well looked after with boutique beers and the usual bar offerings.
If the taxidermy hasn’t hindered your appetite, a small menu of bar snacks and burgers will hit the spot. Bottomless bowls of peanuts are a nice touch.
