BYO Coffee Cup: Save Dollars, Help the Planet

Show up with your own coffee cup and these Adelaide cafes will give you a discount.

Discarded coffee cups are becoming a huge problem for Australia. We throw away around 100,000 cups every single hour, and they’re piling up in ugly landfills all across the country.

If this sounds like a disaster (and it should), maybe it’s time to think about how you can change your coffee-drinking habits and play a more positive role.

Option one: park it. Any barista will tell you coffee tastes better out of porcelain. So sit, relax and take the time to really appreciate your brew.

Option two: try a reusable cup. Larry & Ladd in Regent Arcade recently introduced a $1 discount for customers bringing their own takeaway cups. “A few of our regulars have been coming in with KeepCups for a while,” says owner Jeremy Downey. “We thought it was time to rewarded them for it – and hopefully it will encourage other people to do the same.” Other cafes offer similar incentives. Brad Nixon of Young Street’s Elementary is pushing his customers to embrace the trend, offering pumped-up discounts for all of June.

There’s even a new Adelaide City Council initiative in the works, aimed at empowering businesses to offer discounts. Participating cafes can score $200 by providing regular discounts, and another one-off $500 boon is being offered to tempt operators into adopting compostable cups. Those already serving in approved cups will receive $200 as a pat on the back.

Pick up a reusable cup, bring some porcelain from home, or pinch Sheryl’s favourite mug from the office kitchen and head to these enviro-conscious cafes across Adelaide.
