Let’s just say it, this Alfred guy seems like a real arsehole. Although the weather is eerily calm right now, with the delayed landfall of the storm system, the next few days will be challenging for many residents of Queensland and northern NSW as they brace for Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

Local businesses – especially hospitality and small enterprises who operate with thin margins – may be particularly affected by both closures and potential damage when Alfred hits.

Yesterday Broadsheet took to Instagram to ask local businesses how readers could support them during this time – and if their opening hours are changing.

Here’s what’s open, what’s closed and how we can offer support over the next few days.

Businesses open on Thursday March 6 (for customers who can safely travel)

The situation is evolving so keep an eye on each venue’s socials for updates.

Cakes by Judy C, Ashgrove: Open on Thursday from 8am until midday. Check socials for further details.
Cordelia Sourdough Bakehouse, South Brisbane: Open from 6.30am until 2.30pm.
Corn Street Cafe, Ashgrove: Open from 6.30am until around midday.
Dumbo, Portside Wharf: Opening from around midday until 5pm. Check socials for any changes.
Emily Yeoh, Paddington: The restaurant’s team shared they are open “every day” with takeaway and Uber Eats available as well. “Stay safe everyone and if you are hungry, Emily will feed you,” said the comment.
Fox Coffee, Geebung: Open Thursday 6am until 11am, closed Friday and hoping to reopen Saturday.
Hampson Honey, Jimboomba: The family-owned honey outfit will be “operating remotely for as long as we have power and internet”. Orders can be placed by contacting [email protected].
Humble on Duke, Sunshine Beach: Open every night this week.
Jocelyn’s Provisions, Albion & Fortitude Valley: The team shared that its Albion and James Street stores would be open from 7am until 11am, but said they were “keeping an eye on the situation so check our socials for updates”.
Little Red Bakery, Red Hill: Staying open from 7am until 1.30pm today.
NYC Bagel, West End and Westfield Chermside: Open in the West End from 6.30am until 2.30pm and in Westfield Chermside from 8am until 3.30pm.
Ollie’s Espresso Bar, Nundah: Open on Thursday “until we run out of milk”. The team is also selling $10 toasties and bags of coffee for anyone brewing at home over the next few days.
Petrichor & Co, Hamilton: Open until 1pm Thursday, closed Friday and hoping to return on Saturday.
Practice Studio, South Brisbane: The local alteration business will be “hemming pants until the power shuts down”.
River Styx Recovery, Tarragindi: The team behind the wellness centre said it is staying open “where we can but happy for people to Instagram [message]”. The team also reminded people to “support closing places by buying gift cards”.
Snug, Coorparoo: Open for coffees and pastries from 6am until 3pm and offering a brunch menu from 11am until 2pm.
Sprout Artisan Bakery, New Farm: The local bakery will be open “unless unsafe” but encourage customers to check socials for updates.
Straits, Coorparoo: Open on Thursday until 10am or 11am for takeaway.
Superthing, West End: Open from 7am until 2pm.

Akah Chicken, Margate: Closed on Thursday and Friday and “back frying chicken on Saturday if all goes to plan”.
Bar Pacino, CBD: The riverside bar will be closed “for the duration” but hopes to “be back unscathed next week”.
Before & After, CBD: Closed on Thursday and hoping to reopen on Friday from 4pm.
Betty’s Burgers, various locations: The Queensland and Byron Bay restaurants will be closed on Thursday and update their socials day-by-day.
Botanica Real Food, various locations: All locations will be closed until “at least Saturday”.
Brewbakers, various locations: The bakery won’t be holding it’s Saturday stall this week but hopes to be back next weekend.
Cerin Pasticceria, Woollongabba: Closed on Thursday and Friday. Check socials for further updates.
Lulu Ramen, Paddington: The ramen shop will be closed on Thursday and Friday but hopes to reopen for the weekend.
Milquetoast, CBD: Closed on Thursday but hoping to reopen by Sunday from 1pm until 10pm. The team asks customers “support us by coming in when this madness is over”.
Neighbourhood Coffee Roasters, various: Closed until further notice.
Open House, West End: The retail space is closed on Thursday and Friday. Information about potential weekend trade can be found on their socials.
Proper Pizza Cafe & Bar, Jindalee: Owner Gregg Clarke said the restaurant was in a flood zone, so the team was “pulling everything out” on Wednesday evening.
Saucy Wench Gourmet Foods, Morningside: The factory shop is closed from Wednesday to Friday and its International Women’s Day event has been postponed until April 2.
Sarni, Ascot: The team says, “If all goes well we’ll be slinging sandwiches on Saturday long into the night”. But they’ve asked people to keep an eye on their socials for updates to opening hours.
Suburban Social, Chapel Hill: Closed on Thursday but plans to open Friday if it’s safe.
• Superbowl, Fortitude Valley: The venue is closed on Thursday and Friday but plans to be “back to cooking succulent Chinese meals by Saturday if all goes to plan”.
