Tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Danny Harley and I write and perform music under the name The Kite String Tangle. I’ve been based in Brisbane since the start of high school and have lived all over the place including Samford, Newmarket, Bulimba, Southbank and now Teneriffe. I love being in a city that feels like it’s having a massive glow-up right now.
What do you love about Brisbane?
The last three or four places that I’ve lived have been right near the river, which I love. I go through phases of running a lot and it’s such a nice boardwalk snaking through the city. There’s a tonne of new places to eat and drink constantly popping up, too; there’s always somewhere new to try.
What’s your favourite place to grab a bite in Brisbane?
For something casual I often go down for a pizza and beer at Range Brewing. I also love Superbowl and The Vietnamese in The Valley. For something fancy Elska in New Farm was incredible but they’ve recently closed.

If I’m in the mood for a whisky, then Saville Row is my go-to. If I want a wine then I love 1889 Enotecca. For a cheeky cocktail, I can’t decide between Stranded or Death and Taxes. My top three pubs and breweries are Zero Fox, Green Beacon or Bloodhound.
When you want to impress someone, where do you take them?
I think the Howard Smith Wharves is a nice slice of Brisbane. Southbank is a super lovely day out, particularly for people with younger kids.
Is there a small business you think makes the city a better place?
Shoutout to my studio complex 4000 Studios who host 14 producer studios. It’s unlike anything in Australia and I’m very grateful to be a part of that community. Also Brisbane-based Brill Coffee, who supplies our coffee beans and keep us all productive.
Where’s your favourite place to gig or listen to live music in Brisbane?
I love The Triffid because of its unique shape and good food (and because it’s near my house). The Riverstage needs a mention, too. It is such an iconic Brisbane venue.
Do you think there is an essential Brisbane song?
I think it’s hard to look past “The Brown Snake” by Thelma Plum. It only came out recently, but it oozes Brisbane pride.
