By now, you’ve probably seen the fuss.

Last weekend, Bernard Salt – Baby Boomer and News Corp columnist – wrote a piece for The Australian targeting “hipster” cafes. His problem? Loud music, hard concrete floors and milk crate seating.

He finished by scolding young people for wasting their money on $22 serves of smashed avocado – money that would be better saved for a house. “I can afford to eat this for lunch because I am middle-aged and have raised my family,” he wrote.

Salt’s argument isn’t helpful. It’s blind to the reality faced by most young people in Australia. Still, we’ve decided to take his advice on board. For the rest of the week, three Brisbane cafes are collaborating with Broadsheet to help you have breakfast and save for a home deposit.

Plum Tucker, Brisbane's smashed avocado specialist, has instituted the First Home Owners Avo Grant. Mention those words when you order and you'll get a generous $5 off any of the cafe's three avo toast options, including the chocolate and chilli avocado with strawberries, nut clusters and purple chia pudding. Not a bad breakfast for $13.

Billykart Kitchen West End (but not Annerley) is offering the First Home Buyer’s Brekkie - avocado, haloumi and tomato salsa on house-made seeded loaf for $12, rather than the normal $16.50.

At Scout Cafe in Spring Hill, avocado, feta, rocket and lemon on toasted sourdough is usually $13. But for the next four days, you can get it for $10 ... provided you sing the name of the dish, I Don’t Think You’re Ready For This Brekky, to the tune of Destiny's Child's Bootylicious. The offer is open to people of all ages, say owners Suse Whitehouse and Candy Smith, not just millenials.

An article in The Australian yesterday promised a “full response to the avocado furore” from Bernard Salt this Saturday in The Weekend Australian Magazine. We look forward to reading it over breakfast.

Discount smashed avocado is available at Scout, Plum Tucker and Billykart Kitchen from October 20 to October 23, 2016 only.
