Last October, the pop-up grocer Andrew McConnell launched during lockdown found a permanent home, just a couple of doors down from Marion and Cutler & Co on Gertrude Street. And it got a new name: Morning Market.

Loosely based on European food markets – and drawing inspiration from what McConnell keeps in his home pantry – it opened serving a very impressive salad sanga, Baker Bleu pizza squares and fancy picnic hampers.

Just six months later, McConnell has announced he’s opening a second Morning Market location in April – in a charming corner store at the intersection of High Street and the tree-lined Grandview Grove in Prahran.

While the offering is still being confirmed, it’ll be similar to that of the Fitzroy original. Expect displays full of bread and pastries, as well as sandwiches, salads and coffee. Plus, topnotch pantry staples, fruit and veg, freshly cut flowers, and an expanded retail range.

It’s an exciting next step for a concept that was never part of McConnell’s original plan. He told Broadsheet last October, “If you mentioned in March that this is what we would have been working on for the last six months, I wouldn’t have believed you.

“It wasn’t strategic, it was a response to the environment. We’ve been forced to change, and if anything comes from this and people are shopping local more, that’s a great thing.”

Morning Market is opening at 579 High Street, Prahran in late April.
