As we told you earlier this year major new festival Melt Open is coming to Brisbane this spring. It’s produced by the Brisbane Powerhouse, along with a team of LGBTQI+ creatives, and celebrates the power of queer arts and culture.
Teasers of the program earlier in the year included a “monumental installation” of naked bodies on Story Bridge by American artist Spencer Tunick (and if you’re keen to get your kit off on Sunday October 27 you can register to be a part of that piece); and a pride parade down the Brown Snake with ambassador Courtney Act helming a flotilla of colourful boats.

SUBSCRIBE NOWA Day on the Green at Sirromet Wines will bring a series of ’90s and ’00s artists to the stage, with performances from English boyband institution Take That, Miss Murder on the Dancefloor herself Sophie Ellis-Bextor and our very own Ricki-Lee.
Bidjara artist Christian Thompson will unveil a large-scale outdoor exhibition, including a new work which will be displayed on the facade of the Brisbane Powerhouse. Like a lot of Thompson’s work, the pieces will focus on the idea of “otherness”.
Confidence Man, fresh from Glastonbury, are on the bill too. There will also be sapphic shimmying from burlesque dancers at Femme Follies Burlesque, which gathers some of Australia’s most acclaimed queer artists. Hans: Disco Spektakulär! is also bringing razzle dazzle to the festival. Valley Pool is breaking out an Astroturf dance floor for a pool party with Pina Coladas and throwback tunes. There’s a night of horror with Drag Race stars and a Wicked Halloween Ball at Club Broadway which celebrates the one-two punch of Halloween and Wicked.
