In the constellation of hospitality openings that make up The Star group Sokyo, a much-loved Japanese fine diner in Sydney, and its Gold Coast sister restaurant Kiyomi, shine brightest. Today The Star Brisbane announces it will welcome a twinkling institution of its own with a local iteration of Sokyo coming to the precinct in August.
In a statement The Star Brisbane’s general food and beverage manager Dustin Osuch says, “Brisbane is rapidly evolving into one of the nation’s top dining destinations and Sokyo will bring an exciting and unexpected flavour to the city whilst staying true to Brisbane’s unique culture.”
Sokyo, which opened in Sydney in 2011, is known for cooking that highlights the theatre and tradition of Japanese culture. Chef Alex Yu – whose commitment to precision and artistry earnt him the moniker “sashimi florist” – will come aboard as executive head chef.

Signature Sokyo dishes the spicy tuna on crispy rice, and kingfish with miso ceviche and crispy potato will both be on the opening menu at Sokyo Brisbane. And Yu says new dishes “will draw from my time in Sydney and Melbourne.” He hopes to include maitake mushroom dishes, truffle-infused lobster on a Japanese charcoal grill, as well as Queensland yellowfin tuna with aioli.
The 160-seat space is designed by Hassell Studio. Drinks include traditional sake and whisky as well as Japanese, wine (both bottled and on-tap) and shochu cocktails.
Sokyo Brisbane is set to open in August 2024 at The Star Brisbane, Queen’s Wharf.
