A restaurant needs a reason to be. There’s the birthday or special-occasion place, there the “sexy date” place, the family place, the let’s-just-get-fed place and the pinnacle of happy memories: the holiday place. Six Beaches Fish Grill & Bar, Stradbroke Island, is that place.
“We wanted to create a beachside restaurant that was friendly and relaxed for locals and visitors alike. We want to give people excellent food sourced locally, and not care whether you roll in straight from the beach or make an occasion out of it,” says co-owner Garry Lyons.
Lyons and business partner Bodean Shea also run The Prawn Shack across the road. Six Beaches acts like a 50-seat extension for the famous little takeaway shop, with a breezy open fit-out that brings the beach indoors.

SUBSCRIBE NOWWalk in with sandy feet for pert local rock oysters, served with a simple red wine and shallot vinaigrette. Or perhaps fresh squid crumbed in panko, fried until golden and served with aioli and sweet chilli sauce. Both dishes are readymade for a crisp glass of riesling, pinot grigio and friends. The concise list has options from France, Italy and Australia, plus local beers and cocktails that feature gin, tequila, mint, cucumber, citrus and other light, refreshing mixers.
The build-your-own pork belly bao are fun, if a little messy. The buns are large, ready to do the heavy lifting for pork that’s spent a good amount of time braising in master stock so the meat can be forked apart. The skin is offered separately as crisps.
On the larger side, chargrilled Moreton Bay bugs sit atop a pesto and roast tomato-laden angel hair pasta that requires several items of cutlery, and a bit of fortitude. Salmon with buttered mash and green beans suggests a British pub sensibility, and the Queensland-reared rib fillet steak is very much old-school, with its thick red-wine jus and horseradish mustard cream accompaniments.
