Brisbane City Council has been working to make sports and recreation activities more affordable and accessible for city-dwellers. Off the back of its $2 Summer Dips program, it’s opened a new multi-use sports court in the middle of the CBD.
An extension of the Heritage Lanes precinct, the space beneath Turbot Street Underpass is part of Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner’s urban renewal project. “This hidden pocket that was previously boring concrete has been transformed into an active haven with a fenced and shaded court, bleacher style seating, and public art for the community to enjoy,” Schrinner said in a statement.
The courts are a first for the Brisbane CBD, catering to soccer, basketball, handball and – the newest craze – pickleball. The court is free for public use from 7am to 7pm every day, but you do have to book a slot through the Heritage Lanes website.
